A Few Of My Favorite Things - Pen Edition

Pretty pens are a MUST for a calligrapher

Okay, fine, not a MUST but it sure does make calligraphy more fun to do. Whether you’re a straight pen lover or an oblique girlie like me, you probably have a few go-to favorite pens. If you don’t then you for sure will by the end of this blog!

First - what’s the difference between a straight holder and an oblique holder? A straight holder has the nib at the very end of the pen. This will function much like a regular pen or pencil and is a great transitional option for a beginner who has never picked up a calligraphy pen before. An oblique holder has a flange off to the side where the nib sits, rather than at the bottom of the pen. You can see this below.

Personally, I prefer an oblique holder and have spent much of my calligraphy journey using one. An oblique holder works really well with my personal style of modern calligraphy and let’s face it, they also look fancier in content videos.

So, here are my usual go-to oblique holders and where you can find them.

Happy shopping!

My usual go-to pen is my Oblique from Feather Park Lettering. You can grab your own here. First off, its gorgeous of course. Which helps give my content videos that little something extra. This holder is very comfortable in my hand as well. You want to look for something that you can comfortably hold no matter if you’re doing a single card or hundreds of place cards. I have had this holder for a couple years now and it still works as perfectly as the day I got it!

My two other favorite pens (the black and green ones pictured) are both from My Beloved Calligraphy! The black pen is a nice, classic oblique holder. With its long tail and comfortable grip it is one you will reach for over and over. However, the green Free pen is the real star of the show. This pen is custom made to the measurements of my hand! This means that it fits seamlessly and comfortably in my hand. Such a unique way to shop for a pen - you can choose the color, put in your measurements according to the chart and change the length of the tail to make it perfect for you. You can find both of these pens here.
